In the ongoing legal battle between Ripple Labs and the SEC, lawyer Bill Morgan has criticized the notion of a “showdown” over a potential settlement. This perspective contrasts with Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse’s optimistic outlook on a near-term resolution.
Since December 2020, the SEC has alleged that Ripple raised over $1.3 billion through unregistered XRP sales. A 2024 ruling by Judge Analisa Torres clarified that certain sales did not constitute securities transactions. Morgan highlighted that a settlement could pose obstacles for future XRP sales by Ripple.
Former SEC lawyer Marc Fagel echoed skepticism about the settlement, noting the SEC’s hefty financial demands. The case’s complexity is further compounded by regulatory uncertainties affecting Ripple’s potential IPO in the U.S.
This legal battle’s outcome will significantly impact Ripple’s future operations and the broader cryptocurrency landscape.
