South Korean authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Jon Bur Kim, also known as Park (43), a cryptocurrency market maker involved in an altcoin fraud case. Park, who earned the nickname “Coin King” through his social media presence, is accused of embezzling approximately $14.5 million and manipulating prices.
Prosecutors allege that Park bribed executives at a cryptocurrency exchange and issued a non-existent token called Podocoin. His previous attempt to flee to China by sea was thwarted by a storm, leading to a prison sentence.
The investigation spans from February 2021 to April 2022, during which Park and an unnamed issuer defrauded investors out of $16.1 million. This case highlights the growing scrutiny of altcoin issuers in South Korea due to rising scam coin incidents.
The outcome of this case could significantly impact regulatory measures and investor protection in the cryptocurrency market.
