Stacks founder Muneeb Ali said fears about quantum computing are slowing institutional investment in Bitcoin. He warned that investors may delay large purchases without a credible plan for security upgrades, but acknowledged that some Bitcoin proponents consider the threat distant.
Ali said Bitcoin could face greater risk if developers make no meaningful progress toward quantum-resistant security by 2028. He cited 2030 as a target for the transition and suggested advances in artificial intelligence could bring the threat forward to 2029. Developers are exploring protections, but StarkWare said its reported 79% reduction in the estimated computing cost of an experimental quantum-resistant transaction has been demonstrated only in benchmark tests; it still advocates a protocol-level upgrade.
