Stacks founder says quantum fears limit Bitcoin’s growth

Stacks co-founder Muneeb Ali said fears about quantum computing are slowing institutional investment in Bitcoin. He warned that investors may delay large purchases until developers set out a credible plan for quantum-resistant security. He said Bitcoin could face greater risk if developers make no meaningful progress by 2028, while acknowledging that some Bitcoin proponents consider the threat distant.

Ali pointed to 2030 as a target for the transition, citing US standards guidance, and suggested advances in artificial intelligence could bring the timeline forward to 2029. Separately, StarkWare reported that researchers had cut the estimated computing cost of preparing an experimental quantum-resistant Bitcoin transaction by 79%. The reduction has been demonstrated only in benchmark tests; the approach requires no change to Bitcoin’s consensus rules, but StarkWare calls it a last-resort measure rather than a substitute for a protocol upgrade.
