Norwegian authorities have recovered and returned $5.7 million in stolen crypto from the Ronin bridge attack, a part of the $620 million hack on Axie Infinity in 2022. The National Authority for Investigation and Prosecution of Economic and Environmental Crime, in collaboration with the FBI and Chainalysis, achieved this milestone.
Sky Mavis, the blockchain firm behind Axie Infinity, announced that 15% of the recovered assets will cover recovery costs, while 85% will be deposited into the Axie Infinity treasury. Notably, this event marks a significant collaboration between international agencies to combat cybercrime.
Additionally, $40 million in separate crypto funds have been frozen, with a timeframe for recovery still undetermined. The original hack, attributed to North Korean hackers, exploited a vulnerability in the Ronin bridge, highlighting the importance of cybersecurity in blockchain technology.
This recovery effort underscores the critical role of international cooperation and advanced blockchain forensics in addressing and mitigating large-scale cyberattacks.
