Polkadot celebrated its fourth anniversary on May 26, 2024, by approving the JAM upgrade with unanimous support from over 31 million DOT tokens. This significant milestone marks the network’s evolution by replacing its Relay Chain with a modular, minimalistic design.
Founder Gavin Wood presented the JAM update’s Graypaper at the Token2049 crypto conference in April, and on May 27, he revealed that the community had ratified the upgrade. The ratification shows readiness to oversee the upgrade under the Technical Fellowship’s guidance.
Polkadot, known for its speed and scalability, utilizes multiple parallel blockchains called parachains. The network’s governance token, DOT, is notable for not being classified as a security by the SEC, unlike many competitors. Approximately 58% of DOT’s total supply, equivalent to 822.5 million tokens, is staked on the network, significantly higher than Ethereum’s 27%.
Polkadot’s decentralized governance system, OpenGov, continues to drive network advancements, including the recent JAM upgrade. This strategic development is poised to enhance Polkadot’s long-term scalability and security.
