Blockchain investigators reported that about $6.3 billion to $6.4 billion in digital assets was removed from Binance wallets on Oct. 29, 2026. That would make it the largest cryptocurrency theft by dollar value, but the figures are provisional and do not reflect a completed forensic investigation. Onchain investigators attributed the operation to North Korea’s Tradertraitor group; Binance pledged to cover customer balances, while partners reportedly froze about $3 billion in affected assets.
The amount initially taken may differ from the final loss if assets are recovered or customers are reimbursed. Mt Gox’s 2014 shortfall involved far more bitcoin: about 850,000 BTC was initially missing, and roughly 200,000 BTC was later found. Valuing those historical coins at a fixed $78,000 each is hypothetical, not a measure of what attackers still hold or what could be recovered.
