Hackers stole 18,270.2 BTC from a Binance hot wallet, according to the report, but the precise method of extraction remains unclear. Binance’s preliminary investigation pointed to a compromised engineer’s laptop; later forensic findings found other compromised systems. The FBI identified the North Korean operation Tradertraitor as responsible, matching assessments by several blockchain intelligence firms.
The report says the stolen bitcoin was split among 19 wallets and remained untouched there. Bitcoin transactions cannot be reversed or the addresses frozen by a central authority, so tracing the funds does not itself let investigators recover them.
