Bitcoin Moves 2K BTC After 13 Years

Long-Dormant Bitcoin Wallets Move $180 Million in BTC

  • Two bitcoin wallets associated with Casascius coins transferred a total of 2,000 BTC, valued at approximately $180 million.
  • The bitcoins had been inactive since being minted in the years 2011 and 2012.
  • At the time of minting, bitcoin was priced under $15, compared to nearly $90,000 today.
  • Casascius coins are physical collectibles created by Mike Caldwell that contain embedded private keys for cold storage.
  • Caldwell ceased production of these pre-funded coins in late 2013 due to regulatory issues with FinCEN.

The recent movement of these funds raises questions about their purpose, whether for sales or preservation against potential degradation of physical components. Earlier this year, a user faced challenges accessing funds from a similar Casascius bar after peeling its hologram.

This transfer highlights the enduring value of dormant assets, as evidenced by the substantial worth of the moved BTC, now valued at around $90,000 each since their last activity over a decade ago.
