The UK’s Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has alerted the public to a new email scam where fraudsters impersonate lawyers and demand Bitcoin payments. These emails falsely claim affiliation with Attwaters Solicitors and threaten to release harmful videos unless payment is made.
The scam involves a fake email address, “[email protected],” and uses a non-legitimate domain. No lawyer by the name “Patrice Joyce” is registered with the SRA. The SRA advises verifying any dubious legal communications through official channels and checking their records for legitimacy.
Adding to the concern, the FBI had also warned in June about fraudsters posing as lawyers to scam cryptocurrency victims. This highlights a growing trend of sophisticated scams exploiting trust and desperation.
The SRA’s alert emphasizes the need for vigilance and thorough verification to combat increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes.
