Switzerland’s financial regulator, FINMA, announced on October 20, 2026, that it had approved its first Swiss-law retail exchange-traded fund investing directly in Bitcoin. The approval does not establish that the fund has launched or that it will attract investors. Its launch terms, fees and custody arrangements were not supplied.
FINMA classified the fund as an alternative-investment product carrying specific risk. It said Bitcoin’s trading history and liquidity supported an exemption from ordinary diversification requirements, while supervised institutions must mitigate custody and operational risks. Approval does not make Bitcoin low-risk or guarantee liquidity in every market condition.
