South Korean finance officials plan to consult crypto exchanges about a cryptocurrency tax scheduled to start in January 2027, according to Yonhap. The meeting was reported as planned, not completed. Regulators have already delayed the tax three times, and an exchange official told Yonhap that transaction rules remain unfinished and there is little time to prepare the needed systems.
Democratic Party lawmaker Park Min-gyu introduced a bill to delay the tax until Jan. 1 of the second year after South Korea begins sharing data under the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework. If the first data exchange takes place as expected in 2027, the bill would move the tax’s start to 2029.
