THORChain halts swaps, slowing Binance hackers

THORChain node operators paused swaps involving assets on 10 networks after an Ethereum block reorganization exposed a refund bug, according to the protocol. Trading continued on Avalanche, Base and XRP. THORChain said the bug led to an extra 10 ETH payout and an automatic pause; nodes would re-enable chains when they deemed them safe.

Chainalysis said the pause may have delayed the movement of funds stolen in the $6.3 billion Binance hack by preventing the hackers, along with other users, from swapping through most THORChain bridges. The FBI separately urged crypto service providers to block transactions tied to addresses used to launder proceeds from the hack.
