US Sanctions Canadian Money-Exchange Firms Over Iran Ties

The US Treasury imposed financial sanctions on eight Canadian money-service companies it says did business with sanctioned Iranian entities. Treasury said the companies exchanged Iranian rials and other currencies for digital assets and facilitated transactions with sanctioned Iranian exchanges and digital asset addresses associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The sanctions are intended to isolate the companies from the dollar-based financial system; Treasury said it coordinated the action with Canada’s financial intelligence unit, FINTRAC.

In a separate action, the US Rewards for Justice program offered up to $20 million and possible relocation for information about Iran’s nuclear program.
