Centralized exchanges (CEX) faced a 900% surge in losses due to hacker attacks in Q2 2024 compared to Q2 2023. According to Cyvers, hackers stole $1.4 billion in the first half of 2024.
From May to June 2024, 49 hacking incidents were reported. The most significant attack was on the DMM Bitcoin platform, resulting in a $303 million loss. Key attack methods included smart contract exploits, access control violations, and address poisoning.
Despite the losses, there was a 42% increase in recovered assets, with over 80% returned within 24 hours. However, 76% of stolen funds remain unrecovered.
Cyvers predicts a rise in attacks on second-layer solutions and greater risks for gaming platforms and NFTs. The growing trend of hacker activities underscores the need for enhanced security measures and rapid response strategies to protect crypto assets.
