Sony Group has entered the crypto exchange industry by acquiring Amber Japan, a crypto exchange previously known as DeCurret, and rebranding it as S.BLOX. This acquisition marks Sony’s first foray into the crypto exchange sector.
Amber Japan, operating the crypto trading service “WhaleFin,” announced plans to expand supported currencies and features post-acquisition. The rebranded S.BLOX aims to create new value in cryptocurrency trading by leveraging Sony’s diverse business portfolio.
Founded in 2018, DeCurret was acquired by Amber Group in 2022 to offer regulated crypto services compliant with Japanese financial regulations. However, Amber Group faced challenges in 2023 due to the crypto market downturn and the FTX collapse.
Sony’s strategic move into the crypto exchange space signifies its commitment to innovation and diversifying its business operations. This acquisition highlights the growing importance of regulated and secure crypto trading platforms in the global financial landscape.
