Record collector Warren Hill bought a rare Velvet Underground acetate for 75 cents at a Chelsea, New York, sidewalk sale in September 2002. A $155,401 winning bid on eBay in 2006 fell through; the acetate sold in a second eBay auction in December 2006 for $25,200.
The disc contains early versions of songs later released on “The Velvet Underground & Nico.” Only about two such pressings are believed to exist. Its contents became publicly available through a reissue made from an identical test pressing by 2012.
