Banks Could Unlock $100M Beyond Crypto Custody

Ripple said on Oct. 21 that banks could improve their financial results by pairing digital asset services with suitable custody infrastructure. Research it commissioned from Boston Consulting Group estimates a potential improvement of up to $100 million for a regional bank with a $200 billion to $300 billion balance sheet; this is an estimate, not a reported gain. BCG also found that institutional custody holds more than 30% of digital assets when holdings on centralized exchanges are excluded.

In a separate example, Standard Chartered opened institutional custody for Ripple USD on the XRP Ledger on Oct. 12 and announced plans with Ripple and LMAX Group to make the stablecoin eligible trading collateral. The planned arrangement would leave eligible holdings in the bank’s custody while their value supports trading at LMAX. Standard Chartered said implementation depends on final documentation, testing, legal and regulatory requirements, internal approvals, and jurisdictional readiness.
