Gold Bugs Face Machine That Prints Gold

Marathon Fusion announced that it had converted mercury into stable gold, citing gamma-ray measurements it said supported the result. According to reports cited by the source, the company has not disclosed how much gold it produced, what it cost or whether the result was independently verified. Its claim of a production rate ten times CERN’s does not establish its actual output or show that the process is commercially viable.

A July 2025 Marathon proposal projected about two tonnes of gold a year per gigawatt of thermal fusion power, but that was a simulated yield, not demonstrated production. For scale, CERN reported producing just 29 picograms of gold in lead collisions between 2015 and 2018.
