Lab Tests: UV-Activated Composite Breaks Down 90% of Forever Chemicals

Researchers from Wuxi University, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, and Nanjing University reported that a graphene aerogel and MIL-125-NH2(Ti) composite stripped fluorine from PFAS under UV light in controlled lab tests. After 12 hours, it reached 90.2% defluorination for PFOA; the reported rates for the shorter-chain compounds PFHxA and PFBA were 65.3% and 51.8%.

The result does not establish that the material is ready for municipal water treatment. UV energy costs, catalyst durability over repeated use, and interference from substances in real water remain unresolved.
