Oldest Known Baseball Card Found in Album

Saco River Auction Co. sold an 1865 Brooklyn Atlantics photograph mounted on a card for $92,000 on February 6, 2013. The price included an 18% buyer’s premium; NPR separately reported an $80,000 hammer price. The card had been found in a photo album bought with other items for under $100 at a Baileyville, Maine, yard sale.

The Library of Congress calls the photograph the first dated baseball card and says only two copies are known, including one in its collection. Sportscard Guaranty LLC authenticated the card, according to a company grader. The auction buyer’s name was not released.
