Biden SC Reform Challenges Trump Immunity Ruling

On July 29, President Joe Biden unveiled a three-pronged proposal to reform the Supreme Court, focusing on term limits, a binding ethics code, and a constitutional amendment challenging presidential immunity.

The amendment, “No One Is Above the Law,” responds to a recent ruling that declared former President Donald Trump immune from criminal prosecution for official acts during his presidency. Biden criticized this decision as part of a broader attack on long-established legal principles.

The proposed ethics code addresses scandals involving Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, who accepted undisclosed financial gifts. Biden emphasized the need to restore public trust in the judiciary.

Despite the urgency, achieving congressional approval, especially for a constitutional amendment, will be challenging due to the current partisan split. Biden’s speech at the LBJ Presidential Library in Texas aims to rally support for these critical changes.
