Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin warned in an October 8 X post that AI advances in mathematics could seriously weaken the security of lattice-based cryptography, including schemes considered quantum-resistant, within two years. He described this as a possibility, not a demonstrated break, and urged the crypto industry to limit exposure to cryptography that may be vulnerable to AI-driven attacks.
Buterin said Ethereum’s lean roadmap favors hash-based signatures over lattice-based ones. He noted a practical limit: public-key encryption cannot be built from hashes alone, so he advised using larger parameters for lattice-based encryption.
