Crypto Bank Erebor Gains OCC Approval

Erebor Bank Receives Conditional Approval for National Bank Charter

  • Erebor Bank, backed by Peter Thiel, Palmer Luckey, and Joe Lonsdale, has received conditional approval for a national bank charter from U.S. regulators.
  • The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) will supervise Erebor as it operates as a digital-only bank headquartered in Columbus, Ohio.
  • Erebor’s initial capital is approximately $275 million, pending compliance with cybersecurity and anti-money laundering checks before operations can begin.
  • The bank aims to serve clients in cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, defense, and advanced manufacturing sectors.
  • Erebor’s approval positions it ahead of Ripple and Circle, both of which are still awaiting decisions on their banking applications.

The approval marks a significant shift in U.S. policy towards regulated crypto banking under the Trump administration. Erebor plans to adopt blockchain-based settlements and could facilitate transactions involving stablecoins.

If fully approved after final checks, Erebor could commence operations by early 2026 with its substantial capital reserve supporting its launch efforts.
