South Korea Crypto Exchanges Investigated Fee Hikes

South Korea Probes Crypto Exchange Fee Hikes Amid New Regulation

– The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) of South Korea has summoned the top five crypto exchanges—Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax—following the enactment of the Virtual Asset User Protection Act.
– This intervention was prompted by a series of aggressive fee hikes, with Bithumb planning to raise its usage fee rate from 2.2% to 4.0% per annum, a move that was later retracted.
– The FSS aims to scrutinize fee calculation methods to ensure compliance with Article 5 of the Virtual Asset Industry Supervision Regulations, which mandates reasonably calculated fees based on operating income and expenses.

The FSS’s detailed review of deposit usage fees highlights the regulatory body’s commitment to maintaining fair competition and user protection within South Korea’s crypto market. This scrutiny extends to broader monitoring of unusual crypto trading activities, aligning with the newly implemented Virtual Asset User Protection Act.

The ongoing regulatory changes could significantly impact the operational dynamics and compliance requirements for crypto exchanges in South Korea, potentially setting a precedent for global crypto market regulation.
