The Central Bank of Azerbaijan has decided not to issue a central bank digital currency (CBDC) at this time, due to concerns over monetary policy and financial stability. Central bank governor Taleh Kazimov shared this during a press conference on July 31, highlighting the importance of observing international CBDC developments first.
Kazimov emphasized that while the technological potential of CBDCs is intriguing, their impact on monetary policy and financial stability must be thoroughly evaluated. He noted that no central banks globally have yet successfully implemented a digital currency, with all initiatives still in the pilot phase.
Globally, China leads with its digital yuan, and Russia aims to launch its digital ruble by 2025. In contrast, the U.S. remains undecided, influenced by political debates. This cautious approach by Azerbaijan underscores the importance of ensuring financial stability before adopting new technologies.
