Russia Legalizes Stablecoins for China Trade

The Bank of Russia is considering legalizing stablecoins for cross-border trades as local businesses seek alternative trade methods with China amid sanctions. Deputy governor Alexei Guznov revealed the proposal is under discussion and aims to regulate the entire process chain for international payments.

This initiative marks a significant shift from the central bank’s previous stance against digital assets. Major Russian metal producers are already using stablecoins for transactions with China, highlighting the growing need for alternative payment solutions.

Stablecoins, backed by assets and with a central issuer, address concerns that traditional cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin do not. This change could transition from a temporary experiment to a permanent framework, though the timeline remains unspecified.

The potential legalization of stablecoins underscores Russia’s strategic move to maintain its trading activities despite international sanctions, signaling a pivotal evolution in its financial landscape.
