Taiwan Delays CBDC Launch Amid Uncertainty

Taiwan’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) lacks a specific launch timetable, underscoring the complexity involved. The bank plans to research extensively through public hearings and discussions this year for public awareness.

Globally, 98% of the economy is exploring digital currencies, with the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Nigeria already launching theirs. Taiwan is cautious due to potential issues like governmental surveillance.

CBDCs aim to enhance financial inclusion and payment efficiency. For instance, regions like the Middle East and Central Asia focus on improving cross-border payments. Notable projects include Kazakhstan’s digital tenge and the EU’s digital euro framework.

Existing digital payment solutions meet some intended benefits, but privacy and security concerns persist. Taiwan’s methodical approach highlights the strategic importance of public education and careful planning in CBDC adoption.
