The Bank of Korea began surveying 18 banks and 13 brokerages on Oct. 23, 2026, about cryptocurrency-related risks, according to reports citing financial industry sources. It is the central bank’s first reported review of financial institutions’ participation in the virtual asset market.
The survey asks about firms’ crypto staffing, budgets, activities and investments. It also asks how they would be affected by a major exchange hack and temporary shutdown, a steep price fall followed by weak trading, or heavy crypto-related losses at another financial institution. The survey began before the reported $6.3 billion Binance hack.
