Could Decentralized Phone Networks Power AI?

Acurast says it has onboarded more than 335,000 smartphones to its decentralized computing network, but co-founder Alessandro De Carli says only about 40,000 are fully active on an average day. He claims those active phones match the computing capacity of about 2,340 high-end data-center servers. Ordinary phones have limited memory, and servers remain better at handling multiple tasks in parallel.

Phase has launched a service that lets phone owners provide internet connections and blockchain validation for AI agents; routing AI requests to models on phones is still planned. Studies found that groups of phones could perform some computing tasks well, but tested them in controlled settings. A network of scattered phones must also cope with disconnections, uneven hardware and uncertain costs and rewards before it can provide a reliable service.
