Onchain Lending Hits $1M for 6600 Students

Pencil Finance Launches $1M Onchain Student Loan Cycle in Southeast Asia

  • Pencil Finance completed its first fully onchain student loan cycle, deploying $1 million in capital.
  • The loan cycle financed approximately 6,600 students across 118 schools and universities in Southeast Asia.
  • Of the total students funded, about 1,050 received direct loans, with a focus on underserved populations.
  • The funding included a senior tranche with fixed returns and a junior tranche with variable returns from Animoca Brands, Open Campus, and New Campus.
  • Notably, the loans were aimed at supporting students from lower-income households, with female borrowers making up about half of the recipients.

This initiative by Pencil Finance represents a significant step in utilizing real-world assets (RWAs) for financing educational opportunities through blockchain technology. The project highlights the growing trend of using tokenized assets to provide loans to those traditionally excluded from financial services.

With $1 million allocated to support education for thousands of students, this onchain lending cycle underscores the potential impact of decentralized finance in addressing educational financing gaps.(Source)
