South Korea Cracks Down: Crypto Crime Task Force

South Korea’s Ministry of Justice has formed a special task force to combat the rise in crypto crimes, marking a significant crackdown on fraud and market manipulation. The task force, collaborating with local regulatory bodies, will target price manipulation, unregistered crypto exchanges, and deposit fraud.

This year, illicit activities involving crypto in South Korea have already exceeded $1.6 billion. The Ministry is set to enforce the Virtual Asset User Protection Act in July, ensuring asset protection for crypto users. This initiative underscores South Korea’s commitment to a transparent crypto trading environment, despite lagging in crypto adoption.

Additionally, South Korean financial regulators face pressure to approve crypto ETFs, following the U.S. SEC’s approval of spot Ethereum ETFs. This indicates a strategic move towards aligning with global crypto regulatory standards, highlighting the long-term importance of the task force’s efforts in fostering a secure and regulated crypto market.
