Circle has secured the first Electronic Money Institution (EMI) license for stablecoin operations under MiCA regulations. This allows Circle to operate in 27 EU countries, reaching over 450 million people.
This historic milestone lets Circle issue EURC and USDC through Circle Mint France. CEO Jeremy Allaire noted growing interest from major enterprises and financial institutions in these regulated stablecoins.
USDC’s market cap stands at $32.5 billion, while Tether’s USDT exceeds $112.5 billion. However, MiCA regulations pose challenges for unauthorized stablecoins, as noted by Tether’s CTO Paolo Ardoino.
The EMI license marks a crucial step for the European crypto market, integrating blockchain into traditional finance. This development emphasizes the importance of regulatory compliance in fostering market growth and stability. The strategic significance lies in setting a precedent for other stablecoin issuers entering the EU market.
