Latvia Changes Crypto Tax; 2027 Filing Opens

Latvia’s parliament passed a crypto investment-account tax change on October 15. Under the approach described in reporting on the law, exchanges between crypto assets within an eligible account do not automatically trigger the same tax event as withdrawals above the amount deposited. Investors still need records of their deposits and withdrawals, and account eligibility details remain important.

A separate declaration process would let eligible holders regularize older assets whose original cost basis they cannot reconstruct, with a 10% charge on their value at the end of 2026. Applications are scheduled for April 1 through May 31, 2027, with payment due by July 23. Officials have also discussed allowing crypto tax payments in 2027, but that service has not been established and is not part of the adopted tax law.
