South Korea Crypto Tax: 2029 Delay Sought

South Korean finance officials are expected to meet major domestic exchanges on October 20 to discuss whether the planned cryptocurrency gains tax can start in January 2027. The tax has already been deferred three times. A lawmaker has proposed linking its start to cross-border data sharing, which could push it to 2029, but no further delay has been enacted; changing the date requires legislation.

Exchanges say systems for handling different transactions and calculating cost bases are incomplete, and warn that a rushed start could produce inconsistent tax treatment or move activity offshore. The planned rate is commonly described as 22% including local tax, not 20% in total.
