Google: Schools Rejecting AI Would Lose Search

Google announced that its AI products will be disabled by default for K-12 student accounts unless school administrators enable them. The new controls are expected in early 2027 and will let administrators manage Gemini products and Search separately, including by grade level.

Schools will not, however, be able to keep Google Search while removing its AI features. Google says schools that enable Search will be offered AI Overviews and AI Mode or an education-focused Guided Learning option; schools that want to ban AI entirely would have to disable Search. Educators and politicians have accused Google of using its position in education to pressure schools to accept AI.
