OpenAI plans to buy Google’s tensor processing units (TPUs), according to a person familiar with the matter cited by The Information. Neither company has confirmed the plan, and the price, number of chips and delivery dates have not been disclosed.
Reports in June 2025 said OpenAI had begun renting Google’s TPUs, which it described then as early testing with no plans to deploy them at scale. OpenAI is also hiring an engineer to optimize its models for TPUs and plans to deploy its own Broadcom-built chip, Jalapeño, by the end of 2026.
