Paraguay President Resigns After Bank Lockout

Paraguayan President Santiago Peña announced his resignation after Ueno Bank’s collapse left roughly three million customers unable to access their accounts. Minutes later, the lower house voted 78-0 to impeach him and sent the charges to the Senate, according to AP; his announcement had not ended the confrontation.

The central bank placed Ueno into resolution after regulators found its solvency ratio below half the legal minimum. It says the failure is isolated and has announced a deposit guarantee of up to 228.3 million guaraníes per depositor, with initial payments for eligible customers holding no more than 10 million guaraníes, owing Ueno nothing and holding an account elsewhere. The article contrasts the freeze with self-custodied Bitcoin, which holders can transfer without a bank’s approval, while noting risks including lost keys, theft and price volatility.
