PlayStation Founder Dismisses Disc Ownership Anger

PlayStation founder Ken Kutaragi pushed back against anger over Sony’s plan to stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028. He said discs had become a metaphor for owning games and suggested objections were a “mentality issue,” though he said he understood why some players were upset.

Former Infinity Ward strategist Robert Bowling told Decrypt that publishers push to end discs to improve profit margins. Game industry veteran Chris Heatherly said Sony had misjudged its audience, while noting that owning an online multiplayer game has limits when its publisher controls the servers. A petition opposing the plan had more than 385,000 signatures.
