SpaceX Secures $40 Billion for AI Chips

SpaceX signed a binding commitment for about $40 billion in GPU leases from an Apollo-managed entity, according to a regulatory filing. SpaceX said it had closed the financing deal, but the master finance lease is not expected to be finalized until before the end of 2026. The chips are to arrive in batches, with leases starting in the first half of 2027; the fixed interest rate has not been set.

Elon Musk said lenders had almost entirely cut off funding to companies without substantial revenue outside AI data centers, and predicted consolidation among more than 200 specialist GPU-rental firms. Investor Chamath Palihapitiya forecast more idle or underused AI computing power than expected in 2027. Both were predictions, not reported outcomes.
