The U.S. Department of Homeland Security ordered civilian federal agencies to remove DeepSeek products and third-party services built on its model from their IT systems, and barred new purchases. DHS said their use may transfer sensitive data to China and could yield intelligence on U.S. persons or agencies.
DeepSeek’s open-source model can also run locally or on servers outside China; DeepSeek hosts a version for users of its own service on servers in China. The Commerce Department, the Navy and several states had previously restricted DeepSeek.
