Binance Hacker Dumps $158M; Key Story Questioned

Onchain trackers reported that the attacker behind the Binance breach sold seven stolen tokens for 70,480 ETH, worth about $158.25 million. Lookonchain tracked sales of 7.02 million UNI for $39.63 million on Oct. 29 and 30; the source does not supply a year for those dates.

Binance has pledged to cover losses, but its Nov. 1 proof-of-reserves snapshot had not yet shown whether the sold tokens were replaced. Binance said its initial investigation suggests a compromised engineer’s laptop may have enabled unauthorized withdrawals, and said it found no evidence of a wallet private-key leak. TRM Labs said wallets on nine non-Ethereum chains also moved funds through ordinary signed transfers, and assessed that the attacker likely could make Binance’s signing system sign chosen transactions.
