Zcash Rises After Upgrade Establishes Security Reserve

Zcash completed its NU7 network upgrade at block 3,543,405, cutting its target block time from 75 to 25 seconds. The block reward was adjusted to 0.52083333 ZEC to keep daily issuance on its existing schedule. The 21 million ZEC supply cap is unchanged, and the next halving remains projected for late 2028.

NU7 also activated a mechanism that directs 60% of transaction fees to a reserve, leaving 40% for miners. The reserved ZEC is set to be reissued gradually starting in 2031, rather than burned; a separate proposal to add 50,000 ZEC from the community grants treasury is still under consideration. The upgrade also invalidated Version 4 transactions, making roughly 12,224 ZEC in the legacy Sprout pool unspendable under the new rules.
