Coinbase has alerted the crypto community about the rising threat of deepfake scams. This warning follows the spread of AI-generated images of Donald Trump post his conviction for falsifying business records.
These deepfakes are increasingly sophisticated, making it tough to distinguish real from fake, particularly on platforms like YouTube. Coinbase’s Chief Information Security Officer, Jeff Lunglhofer, highlighted that these scams often target crypto executives like Brian Armstrong and Brad Garlinghouse.
Lunglhofer stressed the need for enhanced security measures, such as vaults and multi-sig signing protocols, to protect assets and transactions. He also recommended using passkeys over SMS-based authentication for more secure transactions.
Implementing these measures is crucial for safeguarding the crypto industry from significant financial losses and ensuring long-term stability.
