BtcTurk, a leading crypto exchange in Turkey, was attacked on June 22, resulting in hackers accessing several hot wallets and stealing funds from at least 10 different cryptocurrencies. Despite this, BtcTurk assured users that the majority of its assets in cold wallets remained secure.
The exchange stopped all crypto deposits and withdrawals to address the breach and is working with authorities to prevent future incidents. This event underscores the volatility and security challenges in the crypto market, particularly in Turkey, where 19.3% of the population owns cryptocurrencies—one of the highest rates globally.
The breach also highlights the strategic importance of robust security measures for exchanges, as Turkey’s crypto market continues to grow amidst economic volatility and legislative changes.
