Scammers impersonating Coinbase employees drained $1.7 million from a user’s cryptocurrency wallet. The victim was contacted via phone and email, tricked into sharing their private key.
These scammers, posing as Coinbase’s security team, sent emails and made calls to appear legitimate. They claimed unauthorized transactions on the victim’s wallet and redirected the victim to a malicious website. Although the victim only partially entered their key phrase, it was enough for scammers to steal $1.7 million.
Hiro Systems CEO Alex Miller noted that even part of a seed phrase can be exploited. He also faced a similar scam attempt, possibly linked to a 2022 CoinTracker data breach.
Scammers often use the Coinbase name to deceive victims, as seen in a $37 million theft involving a fake Coinbase pro website. This highlights the importance of heightened security and vigilance in the crypto space.
