U.S. attorneys are seizing $2.5 million in cryptocurrency from an international “pig butchering” scam targeting American victims. The civil forfeiture action by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia aims to recover 2,546,415.01 USDT seized by the FBI.
The scam, originating in Thailand, involved fraudsters befriending victims under the pretense of romance, then convincing them to invest in fake cryptocurrency schemes. The FBI, with support from Thai Royal Police, is working to hold these criminals accountable.
U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and FBI Special Agent Stacey Moy emphasized their commitment to dismantling such scams and returning money to victims. The forfeiture action, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Blaylock, Jr., aims to deter criminal activity and compensate victims. This initiative highlights the strategic importance of international cooperation in combating cybercrime and protecting innocent people.
