Binance said it had set aside more than $6.34 billion in company funds to cover losses from a $6.3 billion hack, including $5 billion held in the same tokens that were stolen. The exchange did not say when it acquired those tokens or disclose the wallet addresses, citing security reasons. It has not confirmed which tokens it still needs to buy, when it will buy them or how much stolen crypto has been recovered.
Binance said about $3 billion in affected assets had been frozen with help from blockchain partners; those assets were not included in the company funds set aside for losses. TRM Labs said funds were drained from Binance wallets across 10 blockchains and attributed the attack to North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor.
