DMMBitcoin Recovers After $308M Hack

On May 31, Japanese crypto exchange DMMBitcoin lost 4,502.9 Bitcoin (BTC) worth $308 million in a major hack. This incident marks the seventh largest crypto heist and the biggest since December 2022, according to Chainalysis.

DMMBitcoin has promised to reimburse all users fully, thanks to Japanese regulations requiring the separation of corporate liquidity from user funds. The exchange imposed restrictions on withdrawals, spot trading, leveraged positions, and new user registration to prevent further outflows. The hack raises questions about the safety of storing funds on crypto exchanges, highlighting the risks associated with centralized custody.

Many experts advocate for self-custody using decentralized solutions like MetaMask or cold storage to mitigate risks like hacks and theft. This event underscores the strategic importance of secure asset management in the crypto industry.
