Ethereum Foundation Plans Post-Quantum Transition by 2028

Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake said developers are accelerating a planned shift to post-quantum cryptography. Mission 2028 aims to protect Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers by December 2028; the transition is not complete. Developers plan three hard forks after the planned Glamsterdam mainnet fork in January 2027.

Drake said advances in quantum computing and AI pose risks to Ethereum’s cryptographic systems. He put his baseline estimate for when quantum computers could break the relevant cryptography at 2032, with a 10% probability of that happening by 2029. Developers currently favor SHA-3/Keccak for the planned hash-based approach.
